Duke and Duchess of Cambridge praise boy for ‘Superhero’ grandad book

A book that has been written by a six year-old boy in memory of his “superhero” grandfather has been given the Royal seal of approval. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were touched by the tribute that Jake Dolman made to his grandad, who died last September, and wrote to him to show their respect and appreciation for his work.

The picture book called My Best Grandad has been self published and the profits from sales of the book will go to Mountain Rescue England and Wales, the search and rescue trust of which Prince William is a patron.

The Duke and Duchess were posted a copy of the book and in return Jake received a letter sent on behalf of the Royal couple. The letter said that William and Catherine were ‘touched’ by the book. They both also thanked Jake for supporting Mountain Rescue.

The young author was delighted with his letter and said: “It made me happy, I like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge because William will be King one day. I think my Granddad is staring down from heaven with God’s binoculars and he can see my book and I think he is happy”.

The book will not go on sale in shops until September, when it will be available at the Ashby branch of Sainsbury’s, while other retailers are also taking an interest. In the meantime, the books have so far raised £180 as Jake and his mum have been selling copies for £2 each.

Jake’s mum, Selina, said she never imagined the book would become so popular and commented: “it started as a school project about superheroes and Jake stood up and told the whole class his superhero was his Granddad. We have had so many people come up to us after reading the book and saying it brought a tear to their eye”.

Prince William became Patron of the Mountain Rescue trust in May 2007. One of their main aims is the continuation of the search for the perfect mountain stretcher. However, the company say that their greatest achievement has been the recent developments of satellites and mobiles which has greatly advanced the communication capability of teams and casualties in mountainous regions.
