Duchess of Cambridge wins praise from young volleyball player

The Duchess of Cambridge has won praise from young athletes after spending the day with SportsAid at the Olympic Park on Friday.

New mother Kate impressed the youngsters as she played volleyball during her visit to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London.

“She did really well and picked up the sport really quickly,” Grace Lazard, 16, said after the game. “I just feel really privileged and honoured to have played with her.”

Grace, who recently completed in a volleyball tournament in Denmark, added that the Duchess’ choice of footwear only impressed her more.

“She was playing in heels, whoever plays in heels is amazing.”

Friday’s engagement was Kate’s first solo engagement since the birth of Prince George, and also first visit on behalf of SportsAid which she became patron of earlier this year.

The Duchess spent time watching the young athletes, who are tipped to take part in the next Olympics and Paralympics and spent time chatting with them.

She also joined the youngsters in nutrition and social media training workshops, where she asked questions in a mock press conference.

Last month, the Duchess joined Prince William at the Tusk Trust Awards in London. Kate dazzled in a glittery floor-length gown as she arrived on the red carpet for the event which honoured people involved with the charity.

While making a speech, Prince William joked: “This is actually our first evening without him, so please excuse us if you see us nervously casting cheeky glances at our mobile phones to check all is well back home.”

In late August, Kate made her first appearence since giving birth to Prince George, when she joined William at the start of the Ring O’Fire marathon in Anglesey.

It is believed the new mum made the last minute decision to join her husband as a ‘thank you’ to the people of Anglesey for their support during the couple’s stay on the Island.

Next week, William and Kate will be joined by The Queen and close family at Prince George’s christening.

The 45-minute service will take place in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace. Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry are expected to attend the gathering, while Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex will miss the ceremony due to prior engagements.
