Kensington Palace has just announced that Prince Harry has asked his older brother, the Duke of Cambridge to be his best man at his wedding on 19 May to former American actress Meghan Markle.
In a statement, the Palace said, “Prince Harry has asked his brother The Duke of Cambridge to be his Best Man at his wedding to Ms Meghan Markle.”
The expected announcement from Kensington Palace also said that Prince William is “honoured to have been asked, and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19th.”
This decision means that the Duke of Cambridge, who is President of the Football Association, will not attend the FA Cup final taking place later that same day. Aides have remarked that the Prince wants to be there to support his younger brother throughout the day.
Many will remember that Prince Harry served as Prince William’s best man at his wedding to the then Catherine Middleton on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey.
Further details about the wedding party will be released closer to the day of the wedding. However, it is expected that Harry’s nephew, four-year-old Prince George and his niece, Princess Charlotte (who turns three on 2 May) will be in the wedding party.
The wedding will take place at St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle next month at noon. The newly married couple will travel through the town of Windsor in a carriage procession after the wedding before joining their wedding reception at St George’s Hall. A separate evening reception for 200 close friends of Harry and Meghan will be hosted by the Prince of Wales that evening at Frogmore House.
It is expected that Her Majesty The Queen will award her grandson with a dukedom like she did for William in 2011. William was made Duke of Cambridge, and it has been widely speculated that Harry will be named Duke of Sussex. As with Catherine being called the Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan will take the feminine form of her husband’s title.
