Prince & Princess of Wales

Baby Cambridge’s birth is announced at Buckingham Palace

It’s a tradition that has been followed for decades when a royal baby is born and now the littlest princess has her own special part in that chapter of regal history. The traditional framed announcement of the birth of the daughter of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been placed on a gold easel outside Buckingham Palace.

The typewritten note, in its wooden frame, was carried through the Privy Purse door of the Palace just after 12.30pm. It read:

‘Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am today. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well’

It was signed by the medical team which attended Kate during her very quick labour and delivery. Apart from those signatures the only handwritten parts of the note were the time of the baby’s birth and the word ‘today’.

The announcement of the birth of the royal baby had been made just after 11am when Kensington Palace tweeted the news to its then 297,000 followers, A press release confirming the event was issued at the same time.

The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington just after 6am this morning in ‘the early stages of labour’. Her daughter was born just over two hours later and weighed in at 8lbs and 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was at his wife’s side for the labour and delivery.

The new princess is fourth in line to the throne and a fifth great grandchild for The Queen.
