15 facts about Prince William and Kate on tour

In April, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with Prince George, will travel down under to Australia and New Zealand.

To prepare for their first royal tour as parents, Royal Central has compiled a list of 15 facts about William and Kate on tour.

1. Prince William and Kate have undertaken two official tours on behalf of The Queen.

2. The couple’s first tour was to Canada and California in June and July 2011, only two months after their wedding at Westminster Abbey. The overseas visit took just three months to plan rather than the usual 12 months.

3. During the tour of California and Canada, the Duchess of Cambridge wore more than 25 outfits.


4. Their first tour saw huge interest from around the world and was followed by more than 1,300 accredited media individuals.

5. While in California, the couple attended a BAFTA Gala to celebrate British talent where they met Hollywood stars including Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner.

6. The Canadian press marked the tour as a huge success commenting on the fact the Duke and Duchess were greeted as the future King and Queen of Canada, rather than foreign royalty.


7. In November 2011, the British royals joined forces with the Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary as they spent a day in Denmark. The trip saw the two couples visit the UNICEF Supply Division Centre in Copenhagen.

8. In September 2012, William and Kate embarked on their second tour visiting Singapore, Malaysia, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

9. Arriving in Singapore on September 11, the popular royals admired an orchid named in honour of William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales, at the Singapore Botanical Gardens. “It’s beautiful… Nice, very nice,” the Prince said.


10. During this overseas visit, the Duchess made her first official speech abroad, while visiting a hospice in Malaysia, drawing on her experience as patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

11. Speaking to well-wishers, the Prince told one he would like two children. “Someone asked him how many children he would like to have, and he said he was thinking about having two,” 17-year-old student Corin Ackerman revealed about William.

12. While in Malaysia, the couple received news that French magazine Closer planned to print private photos of the Duchess. Dedicated to their tour, the royals remained focused visiting the Assyakirin Mosque in Kuala Lumpur as legal action was launched back home.


13. In Tuvalu, the Duke and Duchess quenched their thirst with delicious coconut milk which was from a tree planted by The Queen during her visit in 1982. Continuing the tradition, the couple planted coconut trees in Funafuti, Tuvalu.

14. Also in Funafuti, the future King and Queen showed off their dance moves as they took part in a Vaiku Falekaupule Ceremony.

15. Due to the Duchess of Cambridge being pregnant, no foreign visit was made in 2013, however in December it was announced the couple will travel to Australia and New Zealand in April.
