Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen is ‘most admired woman’ in UK

A recent YouGov poll has shown that The Queen is the ‘most admired woman’ in the UK, and the 4th most admired woman in the world.

The poll, which was carried out across 23 countries and asked over 23,000 people, saw a scattering of Royals make the cut. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were popular in many countries, no doubt aided by their high-profile tour of New Zealand and Australia, and short trip to Washington D.C. and New York last year.

The Duke of Cambridge was voted the 16th most admired male in the world, and ranked as the 5th most admired on the UK list for men. His wife, The Duchess of Cambridge, held similar rankings as the 15th most admired woman worldwide and 5th in the UK.

The new poll comes as the couple combine their Royal duties with family life in East Anglia. The Duke of Cambridge will visit China and Japan later this month to help boost UK interests, and will begin work as an Air Ambulance Pilot in the near future. The Duchess will give birth to the couple’s second child in April.

Across the globe, there is also widespread respect for members of foreign Royal families. In Norway, King Harald was the most admired man, whilst in Denmark, Crown Princess Mary took first position, followed closely by Queen Margrethe, the third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.

According to the poll, there is also huge admiration for a variety of humanitarians. Former Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, was the world’s ‘most admired man’, whilst the world’s top spot for women was occupied by Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie.

Gates, who made billions when he founded the software giant Microsoft, has given large amounts of his wealth away to a variety of causes and has founded a foundation, alongside his wife Melinda, to expand educational opportunities and eliminate extreme poverty throughout the world.

Jolie has undertaken humanitarian work in recent years, after a successful acting career, and is currently the Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The Academy Award-winning actress was invested into the Order of St Michael and St George in 2014 for her humanitarian work, including her work to end sexual violence in military conflict zones. The Queen made Jolie an honorary Dame Commander of the Order and was received at the Palace in October.

Other notable figures include the Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, who took second place and was popular in nearly every polled country. Yousafzai, 17, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year, becoming the youngest person in history to win the award.

The full list of rankings is available from YouGov.
