Duchess of Sussex’s fans throw an online baby shower and charities are the big winner

An online, global baby shower for the Duchess of Sussex has started on Twitter, leaving a charity “floored” by the number of donations it has received.

Kicking off on Sunday, Twitter user Freepeeper urged royal fans to celebrate the UK’s Mother’s Day by making a donation to charities associated with the Duchess of Sussex, in honour of Meghan and Harry’s first baby who is expected to arrive by the end of this month.

Writing: “We’re kicking off a global fundraiser on Sunday, 31st March in honour of #BabySussex and the compassion and altruism of The #DukeandDuchessofSussex.

“We’ve selected three charities to benefit in this effort. Tweet your donations and include the hashtag #GlobalSussexBabyShower”.

One of the charities selected was  CAMFED, a group that helps educate girls in rural Africa. Taking to Twitter to thank everyone for their generosity, CAMFED said “All you amazing, warm-hearted & generous people: You completely floored us today when you started sending your support & donations in response to @freepeeper’s #GlobalSussexBabyShower campaign. You’ve made our year!”.

Another recipient, Wellchild, a charity that helps seriously ill children spend time at home with their families, told Royal Reporter Chris Ship, they had “received around 100 donations and raised £2,000 and counting — thanks to #GlobalSussexBabyShower”.

The final charity, Mayhew, is an animal welfare charity of which the Duchess of Sussex is patron. They also shared their gratitude by tweeting: “We’re incredibly touched by the generosity of everyone who joined the #GlobalSussexBabyShower this weekend! THANK YOU to everyone who donated and showed their support, you are amazing!”.

While royal fans online activities have been in the news lately, the outpouring of generosity has shown that social media can have a positive impact.

It isn’t to late to join the party, with the online campaign running until the 12th of May, which is Mother’s day in the USA, leaving plenty of time to pick your favourite cause and make an online donation.
