Some of the world’s biggest music stars, sporting heroes and celebrity idols are set to perform a five hour concert to mark the end of the Invictus Games, organised by Prince Harry. Celebrities including James Bond star Daniel Craig, US pop singer Will.i.am and national treasures Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry amongst others, have already pledged their commitment to the games with recorded messages of support.
The concert will take place in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in front of a 26,000 crowd. Highlights of the evening will be shown on the BBC.
There will be an array of celebrities present including television presenter Ben Fogle, wrestler Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton; Olympic silver medallist Iwan Thomas; ex-SAS soldier and writer Andy McNab as well as classical soprano singer Laura Wright.
Prince Harry is the driving force behind the games and in an interview with the BBC, he admitted it had been a “struggle” at times.
Speaking of the closing ceremony concert, the prince said “I am hugely grateful to all the artists and organisers for coming together in September to put on what will be a truly awesome concert.”
“It will be a celebration of everything the competitors will have achieved over the four days of the Invictus Games, not to mention the efforts of the hundreds of other athletes we couldn’t fit into the teams this year. And for those who didn’t make it back from operations, this is also for you.”
The Jaguar Land Rover Invictus Games Closing Concert, will mark the end of four days of sporting competition in which over 400 injured servicemen from 14 nations will compete in the first event of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Sporting events will include athletics, wheelchair basketball, road cycling, powerlifting, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, swimming and sitting volleyball.
One of the headline acts to perform on the night, the Foo Fighters, said: “Thanks for having us, it is truly an honor to come play for these incredible men and women. Can’t wait to do our thing for you.”
Alongside the Foo Fighters, other performers include the Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunt, Ellie Goulding, The Vamps, Ryan Adams, Rizzle Kicks, Diversity and Military Wives Choirs.
