With just weeks to go to Sweden’s Royal Wedding, it has come as a surprise as Princess Madeleine’s fiancé Chris O’Neil has announced he will not be taking on a royal title upon his marriage to the Swedish princess.
The British-American banker will marry Princess Madeleine on June 8th and it would have been likely he would have become “HRH Duke of Gastrikland and Hälsingland” upon his marriage to compliment Madeleine’s title.
“Mr. Christopher O’Neill has respectfully asked to remain a private citizen and not be granted royal status,” read an official statement, released on 17 May.
Now, after the wedding Chris will not carry a royal title. This is unlike Crown Princess Victoria’s husband Daniel, who became ‘Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland’ upon marriage.
Despite Chris marrying the Princess, he has kept his job since the announcement of the wedding, and the financier has not attended any official royal duties with Madeleine.
Princess Madeleine is currently fourth-in-line for the Swedish throne so it is likely that Chris will still work privately after the wedding, although it is possible he will join the royal on some official duties and Swedish state events. Madeleine and Chris currently live in New York, although the wedding will take place in Sweden.
The current line of succession includes Princess Victoria, her daughter Princess Estelle, her brother Prince Carl Philip and then Princess Madeleine.
The couple’s wedding will take place in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm with the ceremony kicking off at 4pm.
The lavish ceremony will be followed by a reception at the Royal Palace – “something that makes me happy and that means a lot to me, because I was born and raised there,” says Princess Madeleine.
Princess Madeleine has so far kept the designer of her dress a secret, similar to Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge who didn’t reveal her dress designer until the morning of her wedding. According to Hello! online, it is expected that the Princess who is 4th-in-line will walk down the aisle in a famous brand, her mother chose a stunning dress by Dior and rumours suggest Valentino could be behind Madeleine’s dress.
Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex will attend the wedding to represent Britain.
Was he even offered a title?
According to the policy of royal house of Sweden he should have given up his career in finances and also become a swedish citizen to be able to have a title and be a HRH. Therefore it really was not a surprise to see him decline the title.
Well, that’s a slap in the face to both the bride to be and to her family. This guy isn’t meeting her half way on anything. Doesn’t sound like the “perfect” son in law to me. Princess Victoria’s husband on the other hand seems to be totally in love and supportive to her while taking on responsibility given him through the marriage.
