Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear for photocall in grounds of Kensington Palace

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared in the grounds of Kensington Palace for a photocall to commemorate their engagement.

Royal reporters and photographers were invited to the Sunken Gardens to take photos of the couple.

The gardens offer a serene backdrop and are known to have been one of Diana, Princess of Wales’s favourite places.

The Prince and his fiancée answered a couple of questions posed to them by reporters.

When asked whether the proposal was romantic, the 33-year-old Prince replied: “of course it was”.

He added that he “knew Meghan was the one straight away.”

The engagement ring is made of diamonds and was designed by Prince Harry himself. It includes one stone from Botswana and two diamonds from his mother’s personal collection.

Monday’s photocall was the first glimpse we got of Harry and Meghan together since the Invictus Games in Toronto.

Earlier this morning, Clarence House announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged to be married.

Since then, members of both families have released statements expressing their congratulations.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”

Before taking Meghan’s hand in marriage, Prince Harry sought and received the blessing of Meghan’s parents.

Meghan’s parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, have released a statement saying: “We’re incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry.

“Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person.

“To see her union with Prince Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.

“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”

Harry and Meghan will now live alongside Prince William and Catherine at Kensington Palace in Nottingham Cottage.

Clarence House confirmed on Monday morning that the couple is engaged to be married in Spring 2018.

Further details of the wedding day will be announced in due course.

Royal Central will keep you up to date with the engagement announcement throughout the day.
