There are reports of a major security incident at Oxford Circus this evening, with chaotic scenes outside of the London Palladium where the Royal Variety Performance is due to be held tonight.
People were said to be taking cover in shops and nearby restaurants following a reported incident in the area.
Police are warning people to stay away from Oxford Circus.
It is unknown whether the Royal Variety Performance will go ahead tonight as planned.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were due to attend, but Royal Central understands they had not arrived at the vicinity before the security incident began.P
Police have told people to get off the streets following reports of gunshots. However, police later said that there was no evidence of any gunfire taking place.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at 16:38hrs on Friday, 24 November to a number of reports of shots fired on Oxford Street and underground at Oxford Circus tube station.
“Police have responded as if the incident is terrorist related. Armed and unarmed officers are on scene and dealing along with colleagues from British Transport Police.
“If you are on Oxford Steet go into a building and stay inside until further direction.
“Avoid travelling to the Oxford Street area.
“At this stage police have not located any casualties.”
British Transport Police have reported that one woman has “sustained minor injury when leaving Oxford Circus.”
