It has been announced that the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber al-Sabah was released from hospital following medical tests this week after having been admitted on Wednesday following a cold. According to Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah the Court Affairs Minister the 88-year-old Emir had left after 24 hours following successfully passing regular medical tests, KUNA, the State News Agency said.
The Emir has been having a busy time of late, as being one of the leaders in the Middle East who allies well with the West he has been trying to broker peace with regards to the problems in Qatar and in September met with President Trump in the White House. We should not be surprised at this, before becoming Emir of Kuwait the Sheikh served as Foreign Minister for his brother between 1963 and 2003, during the period he had to rebuild Kuwait’s international relations after both the Gulf War and the invasion of Kuwait.
Kuwait, under the leadership of the Emir, has been the mediator in a number of conflicts around the Gulf area working under the umbrella of the United Nations and the Gulf Co-operation Council, and because of this Sheikh Sabah is held in high regard by both Secretary-Generals of the United Nations and world leaders like President Trump of the United States and President Macron of France.
In addition to their mediation work, Kuwait under the Sheikh’s guidance has been a world leader in terms of support for humanitarian need, especially with the Syrian refugee crisis. In 2014, the former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon presented the Sheikh with a humanitarian award in recognition of his work.
The Sheikh may well take things a little easier following his cold, and it is said that one of his hobbies is fishing and he occasionally goes to Oman, where he owns a small island and can get away from the crowds and relax.
