King Abdullah II sits down with Theresa May

His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan met with British Prime Minister Theresa May this week.

While most thoughts in Great Britain are concerned with the approaching deadline for Brexit, there have also been economic problems in the Gulf area with all the various diplomatic crises, and indeed whether there will be any secondary fall-out with the trade war between the US and China if the latter chooses to look for other markets.

His Majesty expressed his appreciation for the continuing support of Britain thanks to many historic ties, and the news that Britain will host a conference in 2019 to promote Jordan and boost its economy. No doubt, it will also encourage British opportunities in a post-Brexit world.

One of the other subjects on the agenda was the situation over Palestine, and both countries expressed their agreement to the two-state solution to the Israel/Palestine problem, with an Independent Palestine having its capital being East Jerusalem. This solution would be in-line with the 1967 agreement but was never carried through. King Abdullah, has responsibility for the Muslim and Christian religious sites as the leader of the Royal Hashemite Kingdom. Theresa May is familiar with a lesser but similarly partisan dispute in Northern Ireland which has seen the Northern Ireland Parliament not sit for some considerable time.

The King also sought to highlight the valuable work the UNRWA did for Palestinian refugees with relief, health and education support amidst an economic crisis to fund it. The full title of the agency is the refugee and work agency for Palestinian refugees in the Near East, they support somewhere in the region of five million refugees. The organisation recently support, from both Qatar and Belgium for schools for refugees and the European Union offered scholarships to around 80 refugees to support them through university.

The King and Prime Minister also spoke of the need for a holistic approach on terrorism, and were accompanied in their discussions by Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas, and Adviser to His Majesty for Economic Affairs Mohamad Al Ississ.
