Arrangements underway for Trump to meet Emperor during November Tokyo visit

Arrangements are underway by the Japanese government for United States President Donald Trump to meet His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan during his visit to Tokyo in early November. The President will be in the Asian country from 5 November to 7 November.

Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama met His Imperial Majesty while on a trip to the country in 2009; First Lady Michelle Obama also met the Emperor. The Obamas dined with the Emperor and his wife, Empress Michiko on the trip. The President met the Emperor again in 2014 on a trip to Japan.

The US President will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on 6 November. The Japan Times also reported that he might meet the parents of a Japanese man who was abducted by North Korean agents.

The President is also due to visit South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Trump has also met other royals during his tenure in office. On a trip to Saudi Arabia this year, he met King Salman and was awarded the highest civilian honour in the country by His Majesty. He and First Lady Melania met King Abdullah and Queen Rania in Washington D.C. earlier this year, as well.

Additionally, the President and First Lady met King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians on a trip to Europe. First Lady Melania Trump has also met Prince Harry; the pair met in Toronto, Canada, while in the city for the Invictus Games in September.

President Trump is expected on a visit to the United Kingdom sometime next year. It has been reported that the trip was downgraded from a state visit to a working visit meaning he may not meet Queen Elizabeth on his trip.
