Swedish Royal Wedding Dresses to go on Display

It was announced by the Swedish Royal Court yesterday that five Swedish royal wedding dresses would be on display in an exclusive exhibit at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. The dresses will include the gowns worn by Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine, Princess Sofia, and Princess Lilian. The exhibit is in celebration of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s 40th wedding anniversary. The exhibit will run from 18 October 2016 through 12 March 2017.

King Carl XVI Gustaf married German-born Silvia Sommerlath on 19 June 1976 at Stockholm Cathedral in Stockholm, Sweden. This was the first wedding of a reigning monarch in Sweden since 1797. Silvia’s dress was designed by Dior, and she wore the Swedish Cameo Tiara. They have three children: Crown Princess Victoria (born 1977), Prince Carl Philip (born 1979), and Princess Madeleine (born 1982). They also have five grandchildren: Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar (children of Victoria and Daniel), Prince Alexander (son of Carl Philip and Sofia), and Princess Leonore and Prince Nicolas (children of Madeleine and Christopher).

Crown Princess Victoria married her former personal trainer, Daniel Westling on 19 June 2010, exactly 34 years after her parents. She wore the same tiara and veil as her mother, and her dress was designed by Swedish designer Pär Engsheden. They wed at the Stockholm Cathedral like her parents had done in 1976. Their first child, Princess Estelle, was born on 23 February 2012, and their son, Prince Oscar, was born on 2 March 2016.

Prince Carl Philip married his long-term girlfriend, Sofia Hellqvist on 13 June 2015, at the Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace. Sofia wore a dress by Ida Sjöstedt. Their first child, Prince Alexander, was born on 19 April 2016. Sofia wore an emerald and diamond tiara gifted to her by the King and Queen for the wedding.

Princess Madeleine married American-British Christopher O’Neill on 8 June 2013 in the Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace. She wore a dress designed by Italian designer Valentino. Also, she wore the Modern Fringe Tiara. Their first child, Princess Leonore, was born on 20 February 2014, and their son, Prince Nicolas, was born on 15 June 2015.

Prince Bertil, the paternal uncle of King Carl XVI Gustaf, married Welsh-born Lilian Davies on 7 December 1976. They waited to wed until after his father, King Gustaf VI Adolph, had passed. Gustaf Adolph was a firm believer that royalty should only marry royalty. Since Carl XVI Gustaf had married a commoner himself, he happily approved his uncle’s marriage to Lilian after he became king. They married in the Royal Chapel at Drottningholm Palace with Carl Gustaf and Silvia in attendance.
