Sweden’s Princess Sofia celebrates 32nd birthday

Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland is celebrating her 32nd birthday today. The Swedish Royal Court has said that those wanting to send Her Royal Highness a birthday greeting can do so on their Facebook page.

She will celebrate her birthday by attending the Healthcare Leadership Academy’s Leadership Day at the Nobel Forum at the Karolinska Institutet today. She will join the rest of the Swedish Royal Family on 10 December for the Nobel Peace Prize celebrations in Stockholm.

Sofia Kristina Hellqvist was born on 6 December 1984 at Danderyd Hospital in Sweden, to Marie and Erik Hellqvist. Sofia has one older sister, Lina and one younger sister, Sara. She was christened on 26 May 1985 at Tibble Church in Täby, Sweden. She and her family moved from Täby to Älvdalen when she was six-years-old in 1991.

She lived in New York for a time during 2005 while studying accounting at the New York Institute of English and Business. Sofia also trained to become a yoga instructor while in New York City and taught it while residing in the city. She has also studied at Stockholm University.

In 2010, Princess Sofia founded Project Playground with her friend, Frida Vesterberg. Project Playground works to improve life opportunities for children and young people. They operate in South Africa and Sweden. She is currently an honorary chairman of the organisation.

The engagement of Prince Carl Philip to Sofia Hellqvist was announced on 27 June 2014. Their wedding took place in the Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace on 13 June 2015.  Her father-in-law, King Carl XVI Gustaf, and mother-in-law, Queen Silvia, gave Sofia a new diamond and emerald tiara as a gift to wear on her wedding day. Prince Carl Philip concluded his wedding toast to Sofia by saying, “Love conquers all.” Princess Sofia wrote the lyrics to a love song that she dedicated to her husband during the reception, as well.
