Prince Alexander of Sweden turns one

His Royal Highness, Prince Alexander of Sweden turns one today. He is currently the only child of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. However, he will gain a brother or sister in September. New images of the one-year-old Prince were released today on the occasion of his birthday, as is a tradition in the Swedish Royal Family.

Four photos have been released, and three were taken by Erika Gerdemark and one by Prince Carl Philip.

His first birthday will be celebrated privately with the family; however, his aunt and godmother, Crown Princess Victoria will be unable to be at the celebrations as she is on a four-day trip to Tokyo, Japan. His other aunt, Princess Madeleine and her family live in London, and it is not known if they have made a trip to Sweden to celebrate with the rest of the family.

Alexander was born at Danderyd Hospital at 18:25 CET. His father spoke to the media a few hours after his birth, and his paternal grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced his full name and title at a cabinet meeting on 21 April. His full name and title are Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, Duke of Södermanland.

He was christened on 9 September in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. His godparents were announced the day before as Crown Princess Victoria, paternal aunt; Lina Frejd, maternal aunt; Victor Magnuson, paternal cousin; Jan-Åke-Eke Hansson, a friend of his father; and Cajsa Larsson, a friend of his mother.

Alexander wore the traditional family christening gown that was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolph in 1906. As with his father, aunts, and cousins before him, his name and christening date were embroidered on the gown after the ceremony.

Prince Alexander was born just over a month after his cousin, Prince Oscar. Oscar is the second child of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

His Royal Highness is fifth in line to the Swedish throne after his aunt, two cousins and father. He made his first public appearance on National Day in Sweden where, cradled in his mother’s arms, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia opened the Royal Palace to visitors for the season. National Day takes place on 6 June.

His parents married on 13 June 2015 at the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. Sofia’s pregnancy with Alexander was announced on 15 October 2015 with two black and white photographs of the couple.
