Prince Alexander christened in Stockholm

This morning, Prince Alexander of Sweden, Duke of Södermanland was christened in the Royal Chapel at Drottningholm Palace. It was broadcast live on SVT for the worldwide audience.

The Swedish Royal Court announced that his godparents were his paternal aunt, Crown Princess Victoria; maternal aunt, Lina Frejd; cousin, Victor Magnuson; his father’s friend and best man, Jan-Åke Hansson; and his mother’s friend, Cajsa Larsson.

In attendance were the Swedish Royal Family, including his four older cousins, Princess Estelle, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas, and Prince Oscar. The family of Princess Sofia also attended, as did representatives of the Riksdag, the Government and official Sweden.

He wore the traditional Swedish christening gown that his four older cousins wore at their christenings. The water used in the baptism was from a spring in Öland. The clergy who officiated the ceremony were The Most Reverend Dr. Antje Jackelén, Archbishop, assisted by The Right Reverend Dr. Johan Dalman, Bishop and Chief Court Chaplain, and The Reverend Michael Bjerkhagen, Court Chaplain and Rector of the Royal Court Parish.

King Carl Gustaf presented his youngest grandson with the Royal Order of the Seraphim, and he proudly placed the little sash on Alexander. Alexander will not wear the order again until he turns 18 years old.

Invited guests attended a reception after the ceremony with a private lunch. Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia greeted their guests while little Alexander lay in the antique crib nearby. The crib was made for the birth of the future King Karl XV in 1826.

The little prince was born Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil on 19 April 2016 at Danderyd Hospital in Danderyd, Sweden. He’s the only child of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, who wed on 13 June 2015.

Two new images were released of Alexander with his parents ahead of his christening in late August. However, official photos from the christening are expected to be released by the Swedish Royal Court in the coming days.

This is the second Swedish royal christening in recent months. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s son, Prince Oscar was christened at the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace on 27 May.
