Prince Oscar was born at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm yesterday weighing 3.6 kilos.

Oscar’s father, Prince Daniel, announced the news of the birth to the media assembled outside the hospital, saying that both mother and child were doing well.

Prince Oscar is the second child of Princess Victoria and her husband, and is the first sibling for Princess Estelle. The baby boy is third in line in the succession to the throne of Sweden after his mother and his sister. A 1980 change in law made his mother Crown Princess in favour of her younger brother Prince Carl Philip, who was born in 1979. By then, changes in the law were already planned, though officially Prince Carl Philip was Crown Prince for eight months.

Princess Estelle’s birth was greeted by two 21-gun salutes on Skeppsholmen island, which is opposite the Royal Palace in Stockholm. She was christened in the family’s antique christening gown which was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf when he was christened in 1906. Her name and date of christening was added in embroidery to the gown. The same is expected for this Prince.

The name was announced by the King shortly after he met with Cabinet. A Te Deum thanksgiving service will be held in the Royal Chapel at Stockholm Palace very shortly.

The christening is expected to take place in about three or four months time at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm Palace and by then we will also know who his godparents will be.
