New photos of Prince Alexander released

The Swedish Royal Court has released two new photos of Prince Alexander of Sweden, Duke of Södermanland with his parents, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. These photos were released ahead of the four-month-old’s christening, which is due to take place on Friday, 9 September in the Royal Chapel at Drottningholm Palace.

One of the images features a smiling Alexander being cradled by his father, while the second image is of the family of three. The photos were taken by Kate Gabor in August.

Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, the youngest of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s grandchildren, was born at 18:25 CET on 19 April at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm. His name and title were announced by the King on 21 April 2016 at a cabinet meeting.

The next day a Te Deum thanksgiving service was held in his honour with the King and Queen in attendance alongside Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Christina, and Prince Carl Philip. Princess Sofia’s parents, Erik and Marie Hellqvist, and her two sisters, Lina and Sara, were there, as well. Sofia and Alexander stayed at home to rest. Princess Madeleine was in New York City for her work with the World Childhood Foundation.

He is the only child of the Prince Couple, who wed on 13 June 2015 at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm Palace.

The christening will be broadcast live on SVT with The Most Reverend Dr. Antje Jackelén, Archbishop, assisted by The Right Reverend Dr. Johan Dalman, Bishop and Chief Court Chaplain, and The Reverend Michael Bjerkhagen, Court Chaplain and Rector of the Royal Court Parish officiating. The official photo agency will be the TT News Agency. Prince Alexander will wear the same christening gown as his four older cousins did before him.

The Royal Court has said there will be a reception for invited guests and a lunch after the ceremony. The immediate family will attend with representatives of the Riksdag, the Swedish government, and official Sweden.

They also announced among those invited are foreign European royal families, making it highly likely that one of Prince Alexander’s godparents will be a foreign royal. The little prince’s aunt, Crown Princess Victoria is expected to be one of his godmothers, as is one of Princess Sofia’s sisters.
