King Carl XVI Gustaf sends condolence message to United States after devastating hurricanes

His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has sent a condolence message to the United States after the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida over the past several weeks.

In a letter to US President Donald Trump, the King said, “The Queen and I wish to express our deepest and most sincere condolences on the tragic loss of life and immense destruction caused by the devastating hurricanes Harvey and Irma. We also wish to offer our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and to the people of the United States.”

His Majesty also sent a condolence message to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto after the magnitude 8.1 earthquake that hit the country saying, “The Queen and I wish to express our deepest and most sincere condolences on the tragic loss of life caused by the devastating earthquake late Thursday night. We also wish to offer our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and to the Mexican people.”

He’s not the only foreign royal to send condolences to the United States. After Harvey hit Texas, Prince Albert II of Monaco sent a letter saying, “It is with great sadness and emotion that I learnt of the tragic consequences caused by tropical storm Harvey. I wish to express my deepest condolences and sympathy, that of my Family and the people of Monaco, to the families of the victims.

“Our prayers and compassion are with the injured and the thousands of families who have lost their homes and belongings.

“I also want to salute the extraordinary work of the rescue teams and volunteers. Be assured, Mr President, of our profound solidarity in these difficult times.”

The Queen also sent condolences after Harvey struck saying, in part, “Prince Philip and I send our sincere condolences to the victims of this disaster, to those who have lost loved ones, and to those who have seen their homes and property destroyed.”

Her Majesty also sent a message to Antigua and Barbuda, of which she is Head of State, after Hurricane Irma, a category five, struck the islands, and Dutch King Willem-Alexander just concluded a visit to the Caribbean to the Dutch islands ravaged by the storm.
