Today Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel celebrate the tenth anniversary of their engagement announcement. Ten years ago King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia announced that the Crown Princess of Sweden was to marry her personal trainer, Daniel Westling.
Soon afterwards, a beaming Crown Princess Victoria and then Daniel Westling stepped into a room filled with press and flashing cameras at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. At 5 pm local time that day, the couple gave their first interview after getting engaged a few weeks before.
They revealed that Prince Daniel went down on one knee at the grounds of Drottningholm Palace. He said about the proposal: “It was a lovely sunny day. It was a fantastic atmosphere, I was a little nervous, of course. I was hoping for a yes, but wasn’t completely sure.” Crown Princess Victoria added: “And I said: YES YES YES YES!”

In 2001 Crown Princess Victoria returned from the United States where she had been studying. She tried to overcome an eating disorder and working out was an important part of her recovery. Upon her return to Sweden she met Daniel Westling who became her personal trainer. It was not love at first sight but after a year the couple started dating. Crown Princess Victoria said about meeting Daniel: “I felt very safe with him from the first moment. We got to know each other for a year. I thought about him. He was standing with both feet on the ground. He was full of energy. Purposeful. Driven. Large heart. Honest. Natural and with a strange sense of humor that I learned to love.”
Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel married at Stockholm Cathedral on June 19th 2010, on the same day her parents were married in 1976. It was a big public celebration as people lined the streets to celebrate with the couple.
On February 23rd 2013 their first child, Princess Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary was born. Four years later, on March 3rd 2016, their son, Prince Oscar Carl Olof arrived.
Through the years it has become clear that the Crown Princess Couple is still very much in love. Prince Daniel shared that “my wife” is his big example and later he became emotional while talking about Victoria in an interview.
