Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are on an official State Visit to the Republic of Portugal. They were invited by the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The purpose of the trip is to solidify the bilateral relations between the two Iberian countries and their historical ties.
During the trip, they will travel to Lisbon, Oporto, and Guimarães and be accompanied by Alfonso Dastis Quecedo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Their activities will follow a programme of institutional, political, economic, social and cultural character.
Their Majesties were welcomed at the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Oporto by Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic; José Augusto Duarte, adviser for International Relations of the President of the Republic; and other ambassadors including Juan Manuel Of Barandica and Francisco Ribeiro de Menezes.
President Rebelo de Sousa officially welcomed them at the Porto City Council where both the Portuguese and Spanish national anthems were played. The King and President Rebelo de Sousa then reviewed the troops. Afterwards, His Majesty and the President held a meeting with their respective delegations while Her Majesty met Victor Veloso – the President of the Portuguese League against Cancer.
King Felipe was also given the Key to the City of Porto, and the King thanked his hosts while admiring the “impressive transformation” that has occurred in the city in recent years. Then, Their Majesties travelled to the Serralves Foundation Museum where they visited the exhibit, “Joan Miró: materiality and metamorphosis.” This exhibit contains 80 different works by the Barcelonian artist which are owned by Portugal.
President Rebelo de Sousa hosted a lunch for Spain’s monarchs at the Casa do Roseiral in the afternoon before a hosting a dinner in their honour in the evening.
The dinner was in the town of Guimarães at the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza where 150 guests were in attendance. King Felipe delivered a speech in both Spanish and Portuguese where he expressed how happy he and Queen Letizia were to be in the country. He described the relationship between the two countries, which he called “sister nations”, as incomparable and unique. He concluded his speech by saying, “In the events of today, and in the next two days, a special and intense relationship between two countries and two societies are concretised that respect each other, love each other, and look forward to the future with hope.”
King Felipe and Queen Letizia will visit the Science and Technology Park and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, at the University of Porto today. They will also attend a lunch hosted by the president of the Municipal Chamber of Porto at the Palace of the Stock Exchange. Their Majesties will then travel to Lisbon to visit the Lisbon Municipal Chamber, hold a meeting with the Prime Minister of Portugal, and attend an official dinner at the Necessidades Palace.
