Spain’s Princess Leonor unrecognisable on first coin

Spain’s Leonor, Princess of Asturias is unrecognisable on her first coin that has been issued by the Royal Mint of Spain for the 1300 Anniversary of the Kingdom of Asturias. The coin is also in celebration of Spain’s first proclamation of the Picos de Europa as a National Park, according to Spanish paper, El Pais.

The 12-year-old future Queen of Spain is seen on the front of the €30 silver collector coin alongside her father, King Felipe VI. The coin has “Felipe VI y Leonor Princess of Asturias España 2018” which is “Felipe VI and Leonor Princess of Asturias Spain 2018” when translated to English. The back has the colours of the Spanish flag and the coat of arms of the Principality of Asturias in colour. A pearl pattern is on both sides of the coin around the edge.

The image of the young royal shows the Princess with a more pointed chin and nose and thinner lips on the coin, while in real life Leonor’s chin and nose are more rounded and lips a bit thicker. However, the image of His Majesty the King, unlike that of his daughter, does show a strong resemblance to King Felipe.

The 33mm commemorative coin will be available beginning on Monday, 22 October 2018 at all credit institutions in Spain. Orders can be placed at banks beginning on 30 July.

Princess Leonor and her younger sister, Infanta Sofía are currently attending a summer camp at an unknown location in the United States. They are due to return home to Spain at the end of this month.

The Princess of Asturias is expected in September at the Princess of Asturias Awards for the first time alongside her parents.

Leonor became the Princess of Asturias, the customary title of the heir to the Spanish throne, upon the ascension of her father to the throne after the abdication of her grandfather, King Juan Carlos in 2014.
