On Tuesday in Madrid, Queen Letizia of Spain presided over the UNICEF Spanish Committee Awards 2019.
Her Majesty was received upon her arrival by Spain’s Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare, María Luisa Carcedo; the President of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC), Rosa María Menéndez; and the President of UNICEF Spanish Committee, Gustavo Suárez Pertierra, among others.

The Queen then sat in the front row for the presentation of the awards which were hosted by Teresa Viejo – a Spanish journalist who also serves as an ambassador for the UNICEF Spanish Committee.
A video was then shown of the winners before the Queen took to the stage to present the awards alongside the Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare and the President of UNICEF Spanish Committee.
Three awards were presented in an international category to Francesco Tonucci (an Italian thinker, author, psychologist, and pedagogue), the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, and the “Five Continents” radio programme.

These awards are handed out every two years to “reward and encourage this anonymous and essential work,” according to Casa Real.
In the communication category, Five Continents program of Radio Nacional de España, Radio 5 won, while the Pablo Horstmann Foundation won in the transformation category.
Lastly, the UNICEF Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez Spanish Committee Award was presented to Francesco Tonucci “for his exemplary vital and professional career in defence of children’s rights,” according to Casa Real.

Each winner gave a short speech before the 30th-anniversary video of the Convention on the Rights of the Child was shown ahead of the ceremony’s conclusion.
