Upon arrival at the Foundation’s headquarters at Fundéu BBVA, Queen Letizia chaired the meeting where the topics consisted of:

  • “issues that generate doubts in the use of the language by the media, such as the gender agreement in construction type ‘one of the/one of the’ when they refer to a woman within a mixed group.”
  • “possible alternatives in Spanish to Anglicisms such as ‘Brexiter’ or ‘predatory journals’
  • “the growing use of the ‘casual’ Spanish word with the meaning of ‘casual’ that the ‘casual’ English voice has.”
  • Spelling issues like “the correct writing of the name of the capital of India and the use of those two denominations in the media.”

The Advisory Council meeting was attended by academics José Manuel Blecua, Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez and José María Merino; linguists Pilar García Mouton and Leonardo Gómez Torrego; journalists Soledad Gallego Díaz, Montserrat Domínguez, Jorge Bustos, Mario Tascón and Juan Soto Ivars; an economist named Manuel Conthe; and the Foundation’s director, Joaquín Muller.

Queen Letizia has attended three other meetings with The Urgent Spanish Foundation: in 2015, she attended her first meeting in connection with its 10th anniversary and participated in events in 2017 and 2018. In addition, she has opened many of the International Seminar on Language and Journalism.

The Urgent Spanish Foundation was formed in 2005 to be “a tool that helps all those who use the language in their daily activity in the media, social networks [and] new digital platforms,” per its official website.

The Foundation is made up of “journalists, linguists, lexicographers, orthotypographers, proofreaders and translators” and its Advisory Council meets every two weeks to discuss the “most complex linguistic issues.”

The Foundation’s main goal is to promote the good use of Spanish in the media. It is backed by the Fundéu BBVA and EFE Agency with support from the Royal Spanish Academy.
