Yesterday, President Mauricio Macri of Argentina and his wife, Juliana Awada were welcomed to Spain by Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace in Madrid. The four-day state visit’s purpose is to strengthen the two nation’s bilateral ties.
The King and President Macri inspected the troops after both national anthems had been played and a 21 cannon salute had occurred. They then held a private meeting before Felipe and Letizia hosted a lunch for the President and the First Lady at Zarzuela Palace.
Yesterday evening, a formal gala dinner was held at the Royal Palace of Madrid by Their Majesties. The President and First Lady Juliana wore the Spanish Order of Isabella the Catholic bestowed upon them by the King earlier in the day, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia wore the Argentine Grand Cross of the Order of the Liberator General San Martin. The Queen also wore the Fleur-de-Lis Tiara.
During His Majesty’s toast, he emphasised the friendship with a “privileged strategic partnership.” The King added, “Spain will continue to advocate for closer bilateral cooperation in all areas of our relationship.”
He further stated, “Our bilateral relations have always succeeded in preserving, in spite of short-term conjunctures, an agile, close and effective collaboration on key issues for both: fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime, human trafficking and laundering Of assets, scientific-technological and educational cooperation, and so many other fields for the progress of our societies.”
Felipe remarked that the two countries are united by “much more than a language, a culture, family ties and a solid identity manifested in all imaginable areas. We share a common Ibero-American destiny and the same principles and universal values ─ search for the Peace and solidarity and respect for the rights of the individual – which are a formidable and lasting basis from which to confront the global challenges of the 21st century in the increasingly uncertain international environment in which we live.”
Later today, Their Majesties and the President and First Lady will be inaugurating the 36th edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair – ARCOmadrid. Argentina is one of the guest countries. Macri and Juliana will host the King and Queen in the evening at the Royal Palace of El Pardo.
The President and First Lady will be back in Europe and hosted by King Willem-Alexander and his Argentine wife, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at the end of next month. President Macri has been President of Argentina since 2015. Queen Máxima met him at the official presidential residence in Argentina last year.
