Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit have released a collection of photos as they prepare to celebrate their 40th birthdays this summer.

The couple, who have three children, have released the series of snaps at their royal residence Skaugun Estate in Asker, showing them as a couple and with their family, just weeks before they will mark their 40th birthdays. On July 20, Haakon will celebrate his 40th, while wife Mette-Marit will follow on August 19.

Crown Prince Haakon is the currently the heir to the Norway throne, and he married his wife Princess Mette-Marit, as she is now known, in August 2001.

The couple’s love has been clear throughout their marriage, and Prince Haakon officially adopted Mette-Marit’s son Marius, who was from a previous relationship. The couple’s wedding ceremony lasted an hour, and overcome by the day’s celebration Mette-Marit was brought to tears during the nuptials.

Mette-Marit’s son Marius served as the couple’s page boy and Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark served as the Prince’s best man. After the wedding ceremony, Mette-Marit became known as Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

Britain was represented by Prince Charles and his brother Prince Edward who attended with his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Three years later, in January 2004, the couple welcomed their first child Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who became the second-in-line for the thronebehind her father. Then, in December 2005, Prince Sverre Magnus was born.

In the photos released ahead of their landmark birthdays, the royal couple are shown together and with their children 16-year-old Marius and Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus, now nine and seven respectively.

Earlier this month, the couple attended Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s wedding to Chris O’Neill.
