King Harald and Queen Sonja ended their two-day celebration of their 80th birthday this evening. On Tuesday, the celebrations were characterised by entertainment in front of the Norwegian Royal Palace in Oslo before the royal guests gathered at the palace for a large family dinner.
Wednesday, the celebration was split into two parts. It started with all the royal guests being served lunch on board the Norwegian royal yacht. As the meal went on, the ship sailed on a short trip in the Oslo Fjord and showed the royals all the best sights. The view of Oslo from the sea is exquisite. You can clearly see the city hall, the new modern district and the huge and ancient Akershus Fortress.
After the cruise, there was a little break in the celebration where the royals prepared themselves for the evening’s big dinner. In the evening, the Norwegian government and Prime Minister Erna Solberg hosted a grand gala dinner in the Oslo Opera House for more than 300 guests.
Large areas of Oslo city centre were blocked. The royal guests travelled from the Royal Palace. They drove along Oslo’s parade street, Karl Johans gate, named after the first Swedish-Norwegian union king. Several thousand people gathered along the street, which was full of entertainment for those gathered, to get a glimpse of the royals.
On the square outside of the oldest parts of Oslo University was a children’s choir. Further along the street were several other choirs and military bands who played in honour of the royal guests and to the great delight of the thousands of ordinary Norwegians who were able to see the royals. Many had also gathered at the opera itself to see the royals. The dinner was finished with a magnificent fireworks display that could be seen from almost all of Oslo.
