Queen Máxima celebrates 10 years as UNSGSA at General Assembly in New York

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands celebrates 10 years as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA). Today, the anniversary will coincide with a side event at the 74th UN General Assembly focusing on inclusive finance at 16.30 New York time.

The meeting today will discuss results over the past ten years in the area and look to the future to see what more they can do.

The UN released a video on Twitter yesterday of the Queen talking about the improvements in financial inclusion over the past ten years.

“We have made great progress in financial inclusion in the last ten years. Financial inclusion is a means to improve our Sustainable Development Goals from women’s empowerment, water sanitation, clean energy, reduction of poverty, food security, etc,” she said.

Máxima added that over the next couple of days she will be speaking with more world leaders “to recommit to have a brighter future for financial inclusion.”

The Queen has travelled to New York alongside her husband, King Willem-Alexander who addressed the UN General Assembly yesterday. She presented UN Secretary-General António Guterres with her annual report on Tuesday where she said, “We have to find a solution for the limited use of bank accounts by people who now have access to financial services.”

Queen Máxima has been the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA) since September 2009. She was promoted to the role by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. She travels extensively across the globe in her role to discuss financial inclusion problems and opportunities, especially in the developing world.
