The Prix Princess Charlene of Monaco Charity Mile race will take place today at the Hippodrome in Cagnes-sur-Mer. It is being hosted by the Côte d’Azur Racing Society and is the first ever Charity Mile to be held in France. Today’s race will begin at 3:05 local time with the horses taking part in a 1600-metre race.
Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene has handpicked 18 local foundations and associations for the race. During the race, each charity will be given a sponsored donation. The association of each horse was selected by drawing lots with the chosen organisations by Her Serene Highness. The drawing took place on Thursday, 23 February at the Monaco Yacht Club. Princess Charlene’s brother, Gareth, was there for the drawing as well as the President of the Côte d’Azur Racing Society, François Forcioli-Conti.
According to Monaco Life, the initiative came from Charlene who “wishes to show that Monaco’s charitable convictions extend beyond the borders of the Principality.”
The Charity Mile is quite familiar to the Monégasque royal; her father, Michael Wittstock, has, in the past, participated in the Charity Mile in her home country of South Africa.
The Princess of Monaco told Monaco Life about the race, “This Charity Mile presents a unique opportunity for French racing to be giving back to society both here in the Cote d’Azur and abroad, supporting animal welfare, children and people in need.”
Her Serene Highness continued, “My thanks go to all those who have supported this exciting initiative, and I praise the charities represented for their tireless efforts to make a lasting difference to the lives of others.”
The charities selected by the Princess have been divided up into three varying categories. These are foundations, charities related to equestrian habits, and local causes. The foundations include the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, Prince Albert II Foundation, Princess Grace Foundation Monaco, and Fight AIDs. The equestrian charities are A CHEVAL TROT TOP, Just World International, CDEAM-Handi Mobile Equitation, Coeur de Course, Association des Jockeys de Galop, and Au-Delà des Pistes; the local causes chosen by Charlene are Action Innocence, AMAPEI, Children and Future, Rêv’animal, Fondation Lenval pour enfants, Société de Saint Vincent de Paul Monaco La Croix-Rouge Cagnes sur mer, and La Croix- Rouge Monégasque.
Entry for the event is only €4.50. Parking is also free.
