King Felipe welcomes Prince Albert of Monaco to Royal Palace

The same week that King Felipe VI of Spain was in the United Kingdom at Windsor Castle being invested as a member of the Order of the Garter, alongside King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, by Her Majesty The Queen, he welcomed Prince Albert II of Monaco to Madrid.

On Friday, 21 June at the Palace of La Zarzuela, His Majesty welcomed Prince Albert on the occasion of the latter’s visit to Spain. He greeted His Serene Highness outside before welcoming the Prince into his home where the pair posed for photographers and held a private audience.

Prince Albert II was in Spain to present the twelfth edition of the Awards of the Prince Albert II Foundation of Monaco at the Queen Sofía National Art Centre Museum in Madrid. The award ceremony took place on 20 June in the presence of Spain’s Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, and the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque.

King Felipe previously hosted the Sovereign Prince of Monaco at Zarzuela in April 2006.

Casa Real explained about the awards, “In keeping with their commitment to the environment, these awards reward experts, projects or institutions that stand out in the fight against the effects of climate change, the protection of biodiversity and water management.”

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation was founded in June 2006 to “to address our planet’s alarming environmental situation.” According to the foundation, “The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is dedicated to the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development on a global scale.”

It has since helped fund over 470 projects and has awarded €55 million in grants.
