Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg, the only daughter of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, will embark on her first State Visit to Japan on 27 November. The Princess will replace her mother Grand Duchess Maria Teresa who was first announced to go.
From 27 November until 29 November the Grand Duke of Luxembourg will bring the State Visit to Japan. Initially, ly it was announced that his wife, the Grand Duchess would accompany him however the court has issued a statement in which they confirm that Princess Alexandra will replace her mother. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa suffers from aviophobia, the fear of flying. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa has already flown in the past but since Japan is far away from Luxembourg, the Grand Duchess is not able to go. The fact that the Grand Duchess has aviophobia is not new. She has tried several things to overcome her fears but nothing has worked so far.
For Princess Alexandra, 26, it will be her first State Visit. The fourth child of the Grand Duke and Duchess has already performed some solo engagements but only in Luxembourg. Also accompaning the Grand Duke and Princess Alexandra is the Minister of Economics Etienne Schneider, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn and the Minister of Finance Pierre Gramegna.
The princess is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Conflict Resolution in Dublin. Alexandra has already studied in Luxembourg, the US, Paris and now Dublin. She obtained degrees in literature, social sciences and philosophy and psychology. Princess Alexandra has completed a stage at the United Nations office in New York, as well.
The princess is multi-lingual and can speak Luxembourgish, French, English, German, Spanish and Italian. However, Japanese is not one.
The choice for Princess Alexandra is not unusual. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume has engagements of his own, her brother Félix lives in France with his family and her other brother Louis is no longer in line to the throne because of his marriage with Tessy. Princess Alexandra is fifth in line to the throne. She also has a younger brother, Prince Sébastien.
