Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg celebrates the closing of the Octave

On Sunday, the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg celebrated the closing of the Octave in Luxembourg City.

In the morning, Their Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa attended a pontifical mass at the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Traditionally, only the Grand Ducal Couple attend the morning papal mass.

In the afternoon, they were joined by Their Royal Highnesses Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie, Prince Félix and Princess Claire for the procession. They joined thousands of pilgrims in the celebrations. They walked from Rue de Notre-Dame to the Rue de l’Eau. They had Eucharistic blessings before going to the cathedral, and there, they attended the mass.

After the mass, the Grand Ducal Family went back to the Grand Ducal Palace. The family appeared on the balcony to wave to the crowd that had gathered. Prince Félix and Princess Claire carried their children, Princess Amalia, who will turn three next month, and five-month-old Prince Liam. It was Prince Liam’s first appearance in Luxembourg.

The Octave celebrations are some of the biggest religious events in the small country. It honours Our Lady of Luxembourg, Maria Mother Jesus, Consoler of the Afflicted, Patroness of the City and Country of Luxembourg. It stars on the third Sunday after Easter, and it ends on the fifth Sunday after Easter. The Grand Ducal Family always attend the closing of the celebrations.

Our Lady of Luxembourg is very important to the Luxembourgish people; the members of the Grand Ducal Family are very attached to it and its symbolism. Luxarazzi has reported that the late Grand Duchess Charlotte donated the rosemary she owned during her exile during World War II to the treasury. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa also gifted personal belongings to the treasury the Lady of Consolation before the wedding of her son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume to Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy.
