Greek Royal House denies reports King Constantine of Greece has been rushed to hospital

The Greek Royal House has issued a statement denying that the country’s former King, Constantine II, has been admitted to hospital following a deterioration in his health.

A spokesperson said: “His Majesty King Constantine is in good health and is not in the hospital as the tabloids have published, if so, he would have made an official statement from his office.”

Greek media incorrectly reported that the former monarch suffered a heart attack, however, this proves to be false.

Constantine became King of the Hellenes in 1964 on the death of his father, King Paul. His reign was turbulent and he went into exile following a coup d’etat although he wasn’t formally deposed until June 1973. He spent many years in London and returned to live in Greece recently.

Constantine was born in 1940 in Athens, the second child and only son of Paul and his wife, Frederica. His older sister is Queen Sofia of Spain and his younger sister is Princess Irene. Constantine married Anne-Marie of Denmark in 1964 and the couple has five children. His heir is Pavlos, who uses the title Crown Prince of Greece.
