Princess Tessy of Luxembourg has been named as a patron of the United Nations Association – UK (UNA-UK). She was named as a new patron alongside Lord Malloch-Brown. This is the highest honorary position in the association. They join the UNA-UK’s first patron, Sir Patrick Stewart OBE, in representing and promoting the organisation.
In an Instagram post, Princess Tessy said about her new patronage, “I am honoured to accept the position as the new Patron to [UNA-UK]. I have been working with [UNA-UK] for a while now, and their work is just remarkable in the domains of research, advocacy and diplomacy between the UN and U.K.”
Her Royal Highness has been an advisor to the organisation and according to the UNA-UK in a press release, has “taken an active interest in charities and NGOs, having joined the Luxembourg Groupe de Support Psychologique (Psychological Support Group) and created her own NGO titled ‘Professors without Borders.’”
Tessy has previously served as an officer in the Luxembourg army for five years. In the past, she has said a highlight of her military career was when she was deployed to Kosovo on a UN peacekeeping mission in 2004. She is an advocate for women and young girls and works with UNAIDs where she spoke at the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, last year. She has previously been nominated as an Associate Fellow for the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House. Currently, she is the Director of UK security firm DS-48.
The announcement comes after the Princess was presented with the “Woman of the Decade Creating A Better World For All” award by the All Ladies League and the Women’s Economic Forum on 31 January at the United Kingdom Women’s Economic Forum.
Just Tuesday, Tessy commented on her award on her Instagram saying, in part, “I am so humbled by this award and can’t wait to work more with the [Women’s Economic Forum] on empowering the rights of young women globally. Let’s work together to make this a reality.”
