The Carlos de Amberes Foundation is in the heart of the Salamanca district, dedicated to the promotion of cultural ties between Spain and the three Benelux countries.

The Foundation was founded in 1594 by Carlos de Amberes, a native of Antwerp, Belgium, to accommodate pilgrims and travellers from the Spanish provinces of the Netherlands and as such represents one of the oldest institutions for the promotion of relations between Spain and Luxembourg. It was first a hospice and became a Foundation for culture in 1992. The Board of Trustees is chaired by the King of Spain and Spanish and European authorities.

During the visit, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie were able to see the works of three contemporary artists exposed by the Foundation’s cultural centre: Mary-Audrey Ramirez, a young Luxembourgish artist living in Berlin; Matthieu Manche, a French artist, presenting a work on the city of Dudelange; and Gust Graas, painter and former CEO of LUXAIR who shares his life between Majorca and Luxembourg.

They were accompanied by the President of the Foundation, M. Miguel Ángel Aguilar Tremoya, by the director Mrs Elena Alonso, the ambassador of Luxembourg to Spain, Mrs Pranchère-Tomassini, and the Secretary-General M. Daniel de Busturia y Jimeno. At the end of the visit, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume made a speech, but unfortunately, the Court did not share a transcription of the statement.

This visit was part of their two-day visit to Madrid centred on cultural ties between Spain and Luxembourg. They attended the 23rd Marquis de Villalobar prize ceremony the night before. Adrian Ney, the director-general of LUXAIR received the award. The prize aims to recognise social and cultural ties between nations and to work for unity in Europe.
