Back to School with Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg

His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg was born in 1955 and is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg since his father’s abdication in 2000.

Grand Duke Henri attended secondary school in both Luxembourg and France, obtaining his baccalaureate in 1974. He then studied economics and political science at the University of Geneva, graduating in 1980. Grand Duke Henri met his future wife Maria Teresa at the University of Geneva during their studies. Additionally, one of their sons, Prince Félix, met his wife, Princess Claire, in the same way as they met during their education at the same school in Switzerland, too.

Grand Duke Henri also followed a military training as he went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1974 and was named as an officer in 1975. His sons Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Prince Félix also went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and his younger son Prince Sébastien just graduated from there.

After his graduation in 1980, Henri stayed in Luxembourg and worked actively with his father Grand Duke Jean, representing the Grand Ducal Family and raising his children.

From 1980 to 1998, Grand Duke Henri was part of the State Council so that he could learn about Luxembourg’s parliamentary system and its different branches. In 1998, he was named Lieutenant-Représentant by his father, meaning that he took an even more important role, assuming most of his father’s events and constitutional powers before his father’s abdication in October 2000.

Grand Duke Henri was awarded several honorary degrees in various fields from the Miami University (Ohio, USA), Sacred Heart University (Connecticut, USA), Khon Kaen University (Thailand), Trier University (Germany) and Léon University (Nicaragua).

His Royal Highness speaks Luxembourgish, French, German and English.
