Georgia considering restoring the monarchy

The Republic of Georgia is considering a restoration of the monarchy and turning the nation into a parliamentarian constitutional monarchy after the same model as western European monarchies. The Georgian church also has recommended looking at the possibilities to see if this is possible.

“We could think of Georgia as the oldest monarchy in the world,” said Ilia II, who is the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church. He added that a shift to a constitutional monarchy is a long process and cannot be done in the near future. “We must analyse the past, present, and future,” said the Patriarch.

Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, met with the monarchist Patriarch on Monday to discuss the possible restoration of the monarchy in the small republic which lies on the border between Europe and Asia. Parliament member and leader of the Georgian Legal Issues Committee, Eka Beselia met with the press after the meeting. He said that the Patriarch’s initiative is a notable idea, but that people need to understand the idea first.

Before meeting with the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that a monarchy would bring back stability to Georgian politics and the Georgian state life. In addition, other members of the parliament have spoken warmly about the restoration of the monarchy; parliament member Volski said to the press, “The monarchy would bring positive changes to Georgia.”

The Kingdom of Georgia, also known as the Georgian Empire, was a medieval monarchy that emerged in the year 1008 and fell in 1490. As of today, there are two pretenders to the Georgian throne. They are David Bagration Mukhrani of the Bagrationi Dynasty and Nugzar Bagration-Gruzinsky of the House of Gruzinsky. It is unclear which of the two would become King of Georgia if the monarchy was restored today.

The monarchists in Georgia today make up an enormous political group. In 2013, a survey was conducted questioning the population on their opinions of the monarchy being reinstated; then, 78.9% of the respondents favoured a monarchy over the current republic.

  • It is me again!

Neither David Bagration Mukhrani or Nugzar Bagration-Gruzinsky is considered as the future king in Georgia. Monarchist hopes rest on David’s son who is also Nugzar’s daughter’s son, thus uniting the two branches. The son is today seven years old.

Mukhranski branch never been considered as royal in Georgia so please do not mislead the people ! How can the representative of Georgian nobility become a King whilst there exists a legitimate heir to the throne of united Georgian Kingdom – HRH Prince Nugzar Bagrationi-Gruzinski? Please don’t mislead the readers.

    • It is me again!

Mr Nugzar Bagrationi-Gruzinsky’s claim has the weakness that the same principles that he uses to justify his claim would pass his right to the crown to a Russian family at the time of his passing.

Bagrationis seem to have a quiet understanding that everyone will in the future unite behind his daughter’s son, who officially is from the Mukhrani branch and strongly backed by the church.

When the direct ancestors of HRH Crown Prince Nugzar (Members of the Royal family) already have been forcibly exiled in Russia by occupied Russian officials without permission to return to their homeland the representatives of Mukhrani Nobiliary house had continued live in their fiefs. In 1802 Constantine Mukhranski (Chief of this nobiliary house) was the first among Georgian Nobility to signed the oath of allegiance to the Russian Emperor while not even a single representative of already deposed Royal House of Georgia never signed such a document ! That is one more evidence why the true Royal House of Georgia represented by Bagrationi-Gruzinski royal family reserves the legal right to the throne of Georgia.

        • It is me again!

His claim is fine in principle but after his death it would pass on to elderly Russians who live in Moscow and don’t seem to have any interest in Georgian affairs. Letting the official claim die a quiet death and be happy about a grandson who continues it in real life is a far better option.

It is easy to guess from where supposedly such thoughts could come from and it’s definitely flows from Russian interests – if Georgians restore Monarchy then we (Russian politicians) need a candidate who will be easely controlled by us therefore if we imtentionally nominate and support Mukhranski family whose ancestors signed the oath of allegiance to the Russian Emperor then we would always be able to use this trigger to control and manipulate the “Georgian King”.

As for the heirs, in 2009 HRH Crown Prince signed an important decree by which he declared his elder daughter Crown Princess Anna as heir apparent to the throne after his death which is in full agreement with the Georgian Dynastic Law. I have to remind you that Georgian Dynastic Law allows females to inherite the Royal Throne and we have enough examples of it in our history. As for her son – little prince Giorgi, he will certainly continue the Royal lineage through his mother with the surname of Bagrationi-Gruzinski. Otherwise talk of his intronisation would dissapear in the twilight of the future.
