Prince Joachim and family are guests of honour at Bakken amusement park

On Thursday, 30 March, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, along with their children, seven-year-old Prince Henrik and five-year-old Princess Athena were guests of honour at the opening of the Bakken theme park for the season. Bakken is just north of the Danish capital of Copenhagen, and this is the 434th season of the amusement park. It is the world’s oldest theme park and was opened in 1583.

The family arrived in a carriage and walked the red carpet for the opening day. Both Marie and Athena were presented with flowers after the family was greeted upon their arrival by a Pierrot and a mini-Pierrot. Their Highnesses Prince Henrik and Princess Athena got the opportunity to help the director and Pierrot open the gate for all the guests. They then were able to try, despite the rainy weather, some of the park’s rides, which included a wooden roller coaster.

The Bakken Director, Nils-Erik Winther, said before the official opening of the gate, “[Bakken] has always been Denmark’s amusement park. The wide popular appeal is historic and encoded in our DNA, and we intend to cherish it.”

Later in the afternoon, 100 invited guests attended a private reception with Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena at Postgaarden in Korsbæk Bakken.

This is not the first time Marie and Joachim have taken their children to an amusement park opening. Last year, they took Henrik, Athena, and their older brother, Prince Felix to the opening of the area Ninjago World at Legoland Billund Resort in Denmark.
