Another April birthday as Queen Margrethe of Denmark celebrates

The spotlight of late has primarily focused on Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebration to occur this April. And why shouldn’t it? It isn’t something to be taken lightly, with an ongoing reign stretching over 60 years, and the fact that Her Majesty is still actively carrying out her Royal duties at 90-years-old.

She isn’t the only Monarch who has a birthday coming up that month, though. Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, Her Majesty, Queen of Denmark will also receive public acknowledgement of her birthday on Saturday, 16 April. And though she won’t receive a 3-day event to mark the occasion as Queen Elizabeth will, both her people and family will be able to congratulate her on her special day.

Queen Margrethe had her big birthday celebration last year when she turned 75. she prosessed down Copenhagen’s shopping street Strøget with her sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, to city hall for lunch. Later that evening, the Danish Royal Family welcomed other royals to a gala and banquet, followed by a lavish fireworks display at Fredsenborg Castle to celebrate. This year will see Her Majesty taking a more low-key approach but no less important.

At noon, the Queen and members of her family will appear on the balconies of Christian IX’s Palace, Amalienborg. Members of The Royal Lifeguard will be decked out in red full-dress uniforms. Change of the guard will take place before Christian VII’s Palace. Members of the public will be able to sign a congratulation lists situated at Det Gule Palæ from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Queen Margrethe succeded her father, King Frederik XI in 1972. By the time she became Queen, she and her husband, consort Prince Hendrix already had their two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
