Prince Henrik of Denmark has been discharged from hospital six days after he was admitted to treat an infection in his leg.
The 83-year-old was assisted by hospital staff as he left the building, saying: “It’s going slowly, but I’m doing well.”
Prince Henrik had undergone surgery over the weekend on his pelvis after his initial admission to hospital.
The Queen’s husband had the operation due to an obstruction in his veins and is now recovering at Aarhus University Hospital in Skejby.
In a statement, the Danish Royal House said that the interventions were made due to a narrowing of the pulse veins.
Prince Henrik was admitted to hospital on Thursday to treat an infection in his leg. It is unknown whether his surgery is in any way related to this medical condition.
Since 2016, Prince Henrik has been retired and has participated in very few official duties on behalf of the Danish Royal House. The retirement of Prince Henrik was announced by Queen Margrethe in her annual speech to the Danish people on New Year’s Eve in 2015.
At the time, The Queen said: “My husband has decided that the time has come to step down. Or if I have to say that in plain Danish, he has decided to retire. In the future, the Prince will only participate in a few official events, which for many years have been a natural part of his life.”
Prince Henrik of Denmark was born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat in France in 1934. Henrik married Queen Margrethe in 1967 and became her consort when she succeeded her father, King Frederick IX, as monarch of Denmark on 14 January 1972. The couple has two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
