Danish royals welcome Mexican President and First Lady for 2-day state visit

The Danish royals are hosting the President of Mexico, HE Enrique Peña Nieto and his wife, First Lady Angélica Rivera from 13-14 April. Last evening, there was an official reception hosted by Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, and other royals at Copenhagen International Airport to welcome the pair to Denmark.

Earlier in the afternoon, the President and First Lady were joined by the Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary as they visited the Kronborg Castle and M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark in Helsingør. The Queen later welcomed them that evening to Fredensborg Palace with a gala banquet.

Thursday, the 14th will see the First Lady and the Crown Princess visit a kindergarten classroom where the Mary Foundation’s “Free of Bullying” project will be on display. This was the first initiative undertaken by the Mary Foundation and Save the Children Denmark. The foundation recognised a strong correlation between social isolation and bullying. To battle both issues, this project emphasizes improving social well-being through building strong communities.

According to the Mary Foundation website, The Free of Bullying project has been successfully implemented in half of Danish preschools and 40% of after-school programs and primary schools. The project’s main demographic is children between the ages of three and eight years-old. Through the utilisation of pedagogical tools such as a suitcase containing Buddy the bear, conversation boards and the use of rhythm, teachers are able to talk with students about this abstract subject. Studies have shown that children who were exposed to this program became more caring towards each other.

Meanwhile, the President and the Crown Prince will participate in a business conference at the Confederation of Danish Industry. The President will then meet with the Speaker of the Danish Parliament and then with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. MoUs will be signed and followed by a government luncheon with participation from both countries.

The state visit will conclude with the President and First Lady hosting a return dinner in Copenhagen.
