The Palace say that the results of the exploratory surgery at the London Clinic will be analysed in due course.
The Palace’s words were: “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has had an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. The results will now be analysed. At this early stage he is progressing satisfactorily.”
Prince Philip is said to be “comfortable” and the operation is said to have gone “as planned”, according to the BBC’s Peter Hunt.
The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital yesterday on what is referred to as a planned admission and is now expected to remain in hospital for up to two weeks whilst the rest of his treatment and then recovery take place.
As a result of his admission, the Duke will spend his 92nd birthday in hospital and will probably miss this year’s Trooping the Colour and Order of the Garter ceremony.
The Queen will be spending the weekend at Windsor Castle as normal and is said to be concerned and is being kept informed of developments.
