During their tour, the couple will join Canadians in marking milestones in the nation’s history in the lead up to the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. The Royal couple will also undertake activities that highlight the positive contributions young Canadians are making towards strengthening the country and building the future of the nation.
The theme of the visit is “Canadian Achievement: Commemorating Our Past, Celebrating Our Future”. Their Royal Highnesses will honour Canada’s long history, look at national heritage and patriotism, as well as joining Canadians in looking towards a bright and exciting future.
This is the 17th time The Prince of Wales has taken a tour of Canada. The last time he visited, Charles and Camilla marked the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Queen in 2012. The Duchess of Cornwall has previously taken three tours of the country.
Speaking about the tour, the Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, said: “His Royal Highness has been visiting Canada for over 45 years and it is always a delight and an honour to welcome him.” He added: “The Prince’s knowledge and affection for Canada is exemplified by the work he does here through his charities and the tributes he pays to Canadians who are making a difference in their communities and country”.
During the tour, the couple will visit Halifax and Pictou County on May 18 & 19. Then they will travel to Charlottetown, Bonshaw and Prince Edward Island on May 19 & 20. On the final days, the Royals will visit Winnipeg in Manitoba on May 20 & 21.
