King Charles IIIPrince & Princess of Wales

Prince Charles’s namesake & the granddaughter he wished for: Princess Charlotte

Choosing to name the royal baby Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is quite a tribute to the Duke of Cambridge’s father, mother and grandmother.

Last week during the poresentation of New Colours to the Welsh Guards at Windsor, Prince Charles stated he wished for a granddaughter. His wish came true on Saturday.

Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles and William, and Catherine are likely to have had Prince Charles in mind when they chose it.

The Duke of Cambridge has expressed his profound admiration for his father and the amount of time the Charles commits to his charitable work. “I just really hold him in great admiration,” William has said.

Charles attempted to shield William and Prince Harry after the death of their mother and supported them as they have strived to honour her memory through their charitable associations.

In turn, William and Harry accepted the relationship between Charles and Camilla and supported their father when he married The Duchess of Cornwall.

William is known to be protective of Catherine and Prince George as well as his father. He has defended him against some of the harsh criticism he has often encountered. Naming his the new princess after her grandfather is undeniable proof of his respect and love for his father.

Charlotte is also the middle name of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton.

The name Charlotte is French in origin, it means “petite” and “feminine” or “free man”.

The Office for National Statistics has listed Charlotte as the 21st most popular name for girls in England and Wales in 2013. Its popularity has a waned over the years, as it was once 4th back in 2000. One has an inkling next year; Charlotte will be back in the top ten after this past weekend.

Of course choosing Elizabeth is an obvious tribute to the new baby’s great-grandmother The Queen.

It goes without saying why Diana is part of the newest Royals name. William paid tribute to his late mother, whom he lost at the tender age of 15.

Choosing Diana’s name would be the second time The Duke has paid homage to his mother. The first, of course, was Diana’s famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring he gave to Kate when he proposed to her

Royal bookmakers were spot on when they picked the name George when the prince was born in 2013. Not as easy this time. The bookies heavily favourited Alice, The Duke of Edinburgh’s mothers name and a daughter of Queen Victoria as the choice for William and Kate’s second child.
