Prince Charles has recorded his favourite poem to mark National Poetry Day.
The father of Prince William and Prince Harry recorded the poem ‘Fern Hill’ by Dylan Thomas to honour the annual event.
The Prince of Wales has recorded his favourite poem, Fern Hill, to mark National Poetry Day.
“For National Poetry Day, I was very glad, if somewhat hesitant – to be able to record a reading of one of my personal favourites, Fern Hill, with its poignant and moving evocation of a rural west Wales childhood,” the Prince explained.
“I cannot help feeling this is one of the great legacies of Thomas’s poetry- that it inspires people to appreciate the incomparable landscape of Wales.”
The husband of the Duchess of Cornwall is the royal patron of the Dylan Thomas 100 festival, which will begin later this year to mark the anniversary of the famous poets birth.
Dylan Thomas, who died in 1953 aged 39, has been recognised as one of the most important Welsh poets of the 20th Century.
Earlier this year the Prince visited Dylan’s boathouse at Laugharne in Carmarthenshire after visiting the poets home in Swansea in 2012.
The famous poets granddaughter, Hannah Ellis Thomas, who is also patron of the 100 festival has praised the Prince’s recording.
“It’s fantastic that he is closely involving himself in our centenary celebrations with a reading that my grandfather would have loved, of a poem that meant so much to him and our family.”
