Prince Charles and Camilla to undertake four day visit of the United States

Clarence House have announced that The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will visit the United States next month to undertake a range of engagements to promote the UK’s relationship with the US.

The Prince of Wales last visited the country in 2011 and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2007.

The visit will encourage action on climate change, creating youth opportunities, encouraging corporate social responsibility and promoting historical and cultural links.

Charles and Camilla will mark significant anniversaries in American history when they visit Washington DC, from the 17th March to the 19th March. One event they will be marking is the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War as well as the death of Former President Abraham Lincoln.

In the nation’s capital, The royal couple will visit the Armed Forces Retirement Home, located on the same grounds as Lincoln Cottage. The cottage is believed to be where Abraham Lincoln wrote the last draft of the Emancipation Proclamation. Whilst at the home, Their Royal Highnesses will meet veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coastguard.

On Friday 20th March, Charles and Camilla will depart from Washington DC and will arrive in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. Whilst here they will highlight the work being done by the local community and charitable organisations to protect, preserve and promote the health and well-being of the citizens of Louisville.

The famous Mount Vernon will also be welcoming the royal couple in March. Mount Vernon was the home of George Washington, the first US President, who presided over the convention that drafted the US Constitution.

To further highlight and showcase the historical links between the UK and the US, Prince Charles will mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta during a visit to the National Archives. The Prince will view the “Charters of Freedom” and the 1297 version of the Magna Carta, which is embodied in the American Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Both Charles and Camilla will be undertaking separate engagements in the US for causes that are close to their hearts and showcase their expertise. For over four decades, The Prince of Wales has been promoting action for a sustainable future. The Prince will be presented with an award by the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (I.C.C.F.) for Exceptional Leadership in Conservation. The I.C.C.F. works with the US Congress to set the conservation and environmental agenda.

Camilla has visited Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Referral Centres all over the world, and the US will be no different. During her Washington D.C. trip, The Duchess will attend a meeting of the District of Columbia’s Sexual Assault Response Team (S.A.R.T.) at the Department of Forensic Sciences. S.A.R.T. is a group of public and private community agencies working in coalition to serve victims of sexual assault and to engage in educational activities to prevent sexual assault.

Charles and Camilla’s tour of the United States will come to an end on Friday 20th March in Kentucky. The Prince of Wales will undertake a final engagement giving a keynote address to health practicionors, business leaders and community leaders about links between health and the natural environment.

On a similar matter, The Duchess will visit a food literacy project for young people at a local farm. The project offers young people an opportunity to experience life on a farm in order to help increase their knowledge of the connection between food and farming.

The United States has always been a popular destination to visit for The Royal Family.

The Prince of Wales has visited the United States officially 19 times since 1970 including a further two private trips. His most recent visit was in May 2011 when talked to President Obama at the White House and gave the keynote speech at a conference on sustainable agriculture at Georgetown University.

This will be the Duchess of Cornwall’s 3rd official visit to the USA after previously visiting in 2005 and 2007. Their Royal Highnesses’ visit to the USA in 2005 was their first official overseas tour conducted jointly as The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

The most recent royals to set foot in the United States were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who in December 2014 had a three day tour of the country. Whilst there, Prince William met President Obama in the White House, and both he and Kate visited the 9/11 memorial.

A full itinerary of the visit will be released in due course.
