The origins of the Great Yorkshire Sow date back to around 1837 when it was connected to the Yorkshire Agricultural Society whose primary aim was to meet annually for the exhibition of farming stock, implements and for the general promotion of agriculture. The show was held in various places up until 1950 when its permanent home became the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate and since its inception, the show has seen a plethora of royal guests pay a visit including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, The Duke of York and of course The Queen and Prince Philip, whose most recent visit was in 2008.

Prince Charles and Camilla’s visit to the 2015 Great Yorkshire Show will be on its first day, Tuesday 14th July, and for the show’s director, Bill Cowling, this year’s Royal visit will be a memorable one as it will be his last. Mr Cowling commented, “The Prince of Wales is of course our Patron and I have had the honour of showing our wonderful farming showcase to His Royal Highness and The Duchess of Cornwall, on several occasions. Their presence always creates a very special atmosphere as it is plain to see how much they enjoy meeting our visitors and they have a genuine interest in our show and farming generally.”

On their visit to the show, Charles and Camilla will meet with exhibitors, staff and show visitors and will also be presented with a special gift, a large hamper of regional produce from Fodder, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s award winning shop and café.

The 2014 show saw two royal guests make an appearance as Princess Anne and The Countess of Wessex were in attendance on two different days.
