All parents are required to register the arrival of a child within 42 days by law. Usually, parents attend a registry office in the area in which the birth took place to record the arrival of their baby. In this instance, a registrar went to Kensington Palace to make the official record of the event.

The birth entry shows that the new princess was born in the district of Westminster in the City of Westminster and those already world-famous details of her arrival are recorded in the registrar’s handwriting. The record shows her date of birth but while the world has talked about the delivery taking place at the Lindo Wing this official document states just the name of the establishment – St Mary’s Hospital, Praed Street, Westminster.

And just in case anyone missed it, the little royal’s full names are written out for the world to see as ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge’. Her parents’ full names are also recorded along with their titles, their places of birth and Charlotte’s mum’s maiden name.

Just one parent signs the register when a married couple records the birth of a baby and in this instance it was the Duke of Cambridge who did the honours. His signature on this very important document reads ‘William’.

And just as they did when they registered Prince George, William and Kate have noted their occupations as Prince and Princess of the United Kingdom respectively. That caused some comment last time round. This time no one was surprised that they followed the pattern they set in 2013.

And now that Charlotte is registered, all the formal details of her arrival in the world are complete. All that remains is for this already world-famous little girl to continue settling into life at home with her doting mum, dad and big brother and for the Cambridge family to start enjoying life as a family of four.
